MICROSOFT HAS BAKED AI INTO THE NEW WINDOWS 11

👀 TLDR:

In this week’s What’s Appening, we have something of an AI special, looking at not one, not two, but three big developments in artificial intelligence. First up, it’s the big launch of Copilot AI on Windows, which Microsoft believes will be your everyday companion on your computer, learning your style and then helping you across all Windows applications. OpenAI was also busy this week, announcing the upgraded image generator DALL-E 3 and putting the ‘chat’ in ChatGPT with voice commands & responses. Our Stat of the Week looks at Boomers vs. Gen Z for online scams, and What’s dAppening has news from Milan Fashion Week, where an NFT shoe stole the show.

🪟🕚 Microsoft – Copilot AI Arrives on the Updated Windows 11

A new version of Windows 11 launches today, and with it comes an AI copilot built into the framework of the operating system. The announcement came at the Microsoft AI and Surface Event, and you can check out a video showcasing Copilot AI here. Microsoft calls it “our vision for an everyday AI companion for you.”, meaning AI will help you across all your Windows applications. On a practical level, an example would be Copilot AI learning about your writing style on Word, then craft emails for you in your writing style on Outlook. The Copilot will work with everything from Paint to Excel, learning about you, what you do, and how you do it. We have said before that Microsoft’s AI bet is paying off, allowing it to steal a march on its rivals. The Copilot AI integration with Windows 11 is further evidence of that. #CopilotAI Read more here.

🗣️🎨 AI – Big Updates for ChatGPT and DALL-E from OpenAI

It’s been a big week for AI announcements. ChatGPT will add a voice and image recognition update, allowing you to speak to the chatbot and receive responses in its synthesized voice. It’s a small step closer to the AI imagined in movies like Her, and certainly a giant leap away from the likes of Siri and Alexa. The DALL-E text-to-image platform is also in upgrade mode, with the newest version, DALL-E 3, integrating with ChatGPT. The idea is that it will make it easier for artists to use prompts, with the ChatGPT integration facilitating DALL-E 3’s ability to understand what it is you wish to create on the platform. #NewAI Read more here.

🧓🏽🧠 Scams – Gen Z Falls for Online Scams 3X More than Boomers

We came across an interesting titbit in a recent Deloitte survey: namely, the penchant of Gen Z for falling for online scams. The study showed that 16% of Gen Z (those born after 1997) had gotten caught up in an online scam, whereas just 5% of Baby Boomers had. Now, there are logical reasons for this – your teenage cousin is going to spend more time online than your grandpa. But it also flips the prevailing wisdom that young people are always savvier online than their elders. Another study showed that people under 20 lost an estimated $8.2 million in online scams in 2017. By 2022, that figure reached $210 million. Stay safe out there, kids. #SavvyBoomers Read more here.

👠🖼️ NFTs – Web3 Community-Created Shoes Star at Milan Fashion Week

While some of the hype of the NFT market has calmed down of late, those behind the sector are often creators who see a big future in marrying art & design with NFT technology. Such an example can be found in the haute couture at Milan Fashion Week 2023, which showcased the “Hoofster”, a shoe with NFT capability created in partnership with web3 design studio OnlyEver. In true web3 fashion, the designs for the shoe were crowdsourced. And if you were wondering, the shoe looks awful. But hey, we never claimed to know anything about fashion. #NFTsAtMFW Read more here.
