Zuck vs Musk Fight, Google AI for Good, Amazon AI Reviews, SBF Goes to Jail

THE COLOSSEUM IS RULED OUT FOR TECH BILLIONAIRES’ CAGE FIGHT

👀 TLDR:

In this week’s What’s Appening, we cover how AI can be used in the fight against climate change. Google has demonstrated how the tech can combat the global warming impact of the airline industry, and the results look surprisingly effective. We also have news this week on Amazon AI reviews, and a daily fine for Meta. What’s Appening looks at one of the most loathed figures in web3, as Sam Bankman-Fried heads to jail… Oh, and yes, we reluctantly (finally) report on the Zuckerberg-Musk cage fighting nonsense.

🥊🤦🏻‍♂️ Musk vs Zuckerberg Cage Fight Absurdity

We’ve been resisting this one for a while now. If you’ve been under a rock this Summer, you might have missed it. Lucky you. Now here’s the rundown: After Instagram launched the Twitter/X competitor Threads, the irritated out-of-shape Billionaire Elon Musk challenged in-shape Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg to a cage match. Yes, you heard that right. Worse still, Zuckerberg accepted. The back-and-forth, particularly by Musk (surprise!) has been cringeworthy but for a moment there it felt like it might actually happen. Having trained, competed and even won medals at Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Zuckerberg seems legitimately ready to crush Musk. We’re ready too. Our bet though is Musk is just doing what he does best (nope, not the rockets or electric cars) - trolling! This ridiculous event might still happen, and the latest from Musk is that Italy is the location. Last week though, the Colosseum in Rome was ruled out, presumably by adults. The circus continues. #BabyBillionaireBout Read more here (or better still, just move along and forget this is even a thing).

✈️🌍 AI – Google Fights Climate Change with AI and Satellites

Google has partnered with the airline industry to use AI in combatting climate change. Effectively, Google’s AI has been used to help pilots create fewer contrails. What’s contrails, you ask? They are the white lines you see trailing behind aircraft in the sky. Contrails can account for up to 35% of the airline industry’s global warming impact, but Google’s AI, with the help of satellites, can guide pilots through routes with atmospheric conditions less likely to form contrails, reducing them by up to 54%. A simple story, largely overlooked by the mainstream media, but an important one nonetheless, especially as we grapple with the horrors of the wildfires in Maui this week. #GoogleSaves Read more here.

🤖✍🏽 Amazon – Generative AI Will Now Summarize Customer Reviews

Amazon pioneered the concept of review-based selling, so when it makes changes to the format, the world should take notice. The retailer has announced a generative AI feature (available now to select US customers) that will summarize the key points about your purchase. It’s a nifty tool to be sure, allowing you to filter summaries of specific questions, meaning you don’t need to trawl through dozens of reviews to get the info you are after. However, questions remain about the faith put in AI to provide accurate product information. Review manipulation remains a sore point for Amazon customers, despite attempts to tackle it. Will AI improve it? #AIReviews Read more here.

💰⏳ Meta – Norway Begins Fining Meta for Privacy Breaches

At the stroke of midnight on August 14th, the government of Norway instigated a policy to fine Meta 1 million Krone (just shy of $100K) per day for harvesting data contrary to its laws. It’s been a right old fight between Norway and Meta over the summer, with the latter missing the August 4th deadline to prove it had complied with Norway’s policies. It seemingly did not. #MetaFine Read more here.

👩🏽‍⚖️👎🏽 Crypto – Sam Bankman-Fried Heads to Jail for Breaking Bail Terms

We make no secret that we love the innovation of web3 here at 3Advance. Nonetheless, there are several things that have held back the explosion of web3 adoption, and that includes the role played by bad actors in the sphere. The most villainous in the eyes of the web3 community is Sam Bankman Fried, founder of the collapsed crypto exchange FTX. SBF faces a number of fraud charges and raised the ire of many when it became apparent FTX customer funds were used to hire expensive lawyers. He has, however, now been forced to return to jail for breaking the terms of his bail conditions, including allegedly trying to influence witnesses. A lot of folks were hurt when FTX collapsed – homes lost, and dreams dashed. Someone should pay the price. #SBFJailed Read more here
